This page lets you specify multiple attacking and defending forces, and also allows forces to combine, rearrange, and/or increase tech between attacks. (Tech increases arise when you intend to jump attack on one turn and continue attacking the next turn.) You can ask for the chances of selected sets of forces surviving, or for the chance that a set of forces will have a certain number of units survive, or a certain number of cargo slots or command posts, or an approximate total PU value, or a certain number of units above a given cost. If a combat involves fleets, you can also specify how much cargo they are carrying (armies and RMs), in case that can lead to fighters dying when cargo ships are hit.

If all you want to look at is two forces fighting each other with a single attack and/or a repeated attack, ignoring cargo, and seeing which forces survive, you could instead use the simpler form.

If, after reading the instructions here and later on this page, you need more help figuring out how to use this form, here are some examples.

  1. Enter the units in the forces, separated by spaces, just as you would in a BUILD or ARRANGE order. You can specify quantities, such as "10 AI". Do not specify a force ID (such as "F42").
  2. Give the combat proficiencies.
  3. Give the cargo (army plus RMs) carried by each force, if it could matter.*
  4. If you are checking the results of a sequence of attacks and/or repeated attacks, and want either or both sides to rearrange one force between attacks, fill in the desired rearrangement(s).
  5. Select what information you are interested in obtaining about the outcome of the combat.
  6. If one of the offered combat sequences is what you want, select that button. Otherwise, fill in the section below the button labelled "See Below", then select that button.

* Cargo need not be specified unless it could affect fighters being lost due to cargo ships dying. For example, cargo is irrelevant if there are no fighters in the fleet, or if there is only one cargo ship (so losing it kills the army and the fighters). And of course, cargo is irrelevant in ground combats.

What results are you interested in?

The first set of items below lets you specify which forces to report on. If there are multiple attacking and/or defending forces, you can specify particular forces to report on while ignoring the rest. By default, you'll be told about all forces on both sides. The "which sides survive" results report separately for each side, but the other forms of result (length, capacity, etc.) combine all the selected forces. If you select one of those forms, chances are you'll want to limit your request to just one side or the other.

Note that the results are presented for combinations of forces. For example, if there are multiple forces on each side and you specify "all attackers and defenders" and ask who survives, you will be told whether any attackers and any defenders survive, but you won't get a breakdown of the survival chances of each individual force. For that you'd have to choose "individual forces as checked" and select the specific forces of interest on each side.

The second set of items lets you choose what feature of the selected forces you want to be told about. The options should be mostly self-explanatory. For the last option, you can specify a price level either as a number or by listing a single unit. E.g., to ask about the number of surviving units costing 75 or more PUs, you could enter either "75" or "MR". Note that, if you use the combat option that has one side "concede if selected forces are dead", then in the event of such a concession all forces on that side will have a combined length, capacity, and PU value of zero.

The final set of items lets you choose for which side, if either, you want to know about the average PU value of the units killed. If you have selected individual forces, then only those forces' PUs are included. This can result in a force apparently gaining PUs if another force is combined into it.

For these selected forces:
All attackers and all defenders
All attacking forces
All defending forces
Individual forces as checked: 1st attacker   2nd   3rd
1st defender   2nd   3rd
Report the chances that:
forces of one or both sides survive
their combined length is approximately
their combined cargo or command capacity is at least
their combined PU value is between and inclusive
they contain approximately units that cost or more each

Also report the average PUs lost by the selected attackers  defenders  neither.

Proposed CombatDescription
Each attacker shown does ATTACK ALL vs the defender(s).
Each attacker shown does ATTACK ALL vs the defender(s), then
last attacker shown attacks again. If rearrangements are given,
last attacker/defender rearranges as shown before second attack.
Each attacker shown does ATTACK ALL vs the defender(s), then
last attacker shown does a REP. If rearrangements are given,
last attacker/defender rearranges as shown before repeated attack.
Sequence of attacks and other actions as specified below.

The rest of this form need not be filled in unless you are using the last of the above buttons. If you are, then you need to specify the attacks and other actions being performed. Click here for details on how to fill out this part.

Battle Sequence

How to fill in the above entries:

You can specify up to five attacks and/or repeated attacks, each of which involves a single force fighting one or more other forces. Between attacks, you can specify various changes to the forces.

For each attack, select the force initiating the attack, then select all of the forces that it is attacking. If the initiating force is listed above on the attacking side, the targets are selected from the defending side, and vice versa. (Thus, for example, you could have an attacking force shoot at multiple defenders, and then have a particular defending force do a repeated attack against the attacker.) Finally, select either a single attack or a repeated attack. If you want to do two consecutive "change forces" steps), specify "no attack".

Between each pair of attack steps is a "change" step. Select any number of attacking and/or defending forces, then select one or more changes to be made to those forces. Note that you can make multiple changes in one step, as long as you're able to use the same selection of forces for each change. The possible changes are:

Combine
If more than one attacking force is selected, the second and third selected forces are appended to the first selected force. Likewise if more than one defending force is selected, they are combined. Forces being appended are assumed to unload any cargo they may have been carrying, and they take on the combat proficiency of the destination force. If the destination force becomes full (12 ships or 16 ground units), no more units are transferred.
Arrange
Each selected force is rearranged as if by an ARRANGE order using the rearrangement specified for that side (attacker or defender).
Add prof
Each selected force has its combat proficiency increased by one.
Concede
If any attacking forces are selected, and those forces are all completely dead, then all the other attacking forces are also killed. Likewise for the defending forces. This can be used to model attacks where an early victory is possible. E.g., if your fleet kills the defending fleet in one attack, your army lands and the rest of the fleet battle doesn't matter, but if the defending fleet survives the first attack then it will have more ships built into it or another fleet will jump in, and there will be more combat.

Note: Invalid data (e.g., fighters without cargo ships) may yield strange results. If an apparently valid combat generates clearly incorrect results, or if you get an "Internal Server Error", please send mail describing the circumstances to don@icynic.com.
