Spies In Space Campaign

960926          Roderigo

Run Synopsis
Teresa and Lyle try their hands at the Dejah Thoris around lunchtime and find it's far more ordinary with the business crowd. They return with Boris in the evening and not a tattoo (numbers matching the number on the matchbook) on the wrist of Roderigo Jimenez, the mining-expedition-arranger whom Boris had decided not to talk to the day before.

Rodirego is open and friendly and Boris learns that the last crew he sent out left about a week ago. The tattoo is from time spent in an APS prison camp; Roderigo hates a APS and Orientals in general. Mention of Emilio spooks Roderigo who recalls Chantal and Boris being in at the same time yesterday. Roderigo makes a phone call which Teresa manages to overhear:

Roderigo (AKA Pierre?): "Think the APSs are ... ... some oriental woman. I don't care! Check with your dome StarCorps computers ... I'll meet you on deck ... tomorrow ... no tonight ... midnight."
The team manages to deduce that the "deck" will be the observation deck. The deduction was because (culture knowledge: John Carter City) most places aren't referred to as "Deck [number]" or "Deck [name]"; the place most commonly referred to as a "deck" is the observation deck. It looks out over the canyon that the City is perched against. The team sets up cameras and a spy station on the deck to record the meeting. Lyle managed to construct a shotgun mike from available parts.

Somewhere earlier, the group had rented another set of rooms, in case Chantal got compromised and revealed our first location. While Lyle et al were setting up the listening nest, Boris went and made his room look at least slightly lived in.

Roderigo met a guy who pretended to be from StarCorps (he had also been the police "badge" exhibitor. Roderigo said he got suspicious when he asked about "the guy you had me give the ____ to." [I don't remember if he mentioned the lithium explicitly, or just called it a "package."] The fake StarCorps guy told him they'd take care of it and to wait in his apartment until further notice. Lyle got pictures of the guy.

Boris then followed the guy (and bodyguards) who drove to our "new" hotel. It seems they must have followed Boris when he made his last trip and thus gotten the address. They talked with some heavies who'd been watching from outside, and with one guy who had been inside. Eventually all but one left. Boris got some telephoto shots.

After some discussion, the group sent Robert to pick up the room next to Boris' so that he can check what's been done to Boris' room and be available if there's trouble. He finds that his own room has been used to bug Boris'. He goes for ice to get away from the bugs and calls Boris to let him know the setup. Boris goes back to his room with some bags of newly purchased toiletries, etc. Soon some goons show up claiming to be police; Boris recognizes one as having been amongst the group he photographed earlier.

Boris questioned by "police", particularly re: Emilio. Told to leave planet. Lyle later finds a short-range tracer was planted in Boris' ID papers.

Observe group at Boris' place - Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta - all non-Asians. One definitely had been one of the "police." Deduce that there's a group of APS agents acting on their own, masquerading (at least to Roderigo) as StarCorps.

Boris checked out of his room in Sanctuary after the "police" business, and left his gear in the StarPort dome. We disabled his tracer there so the bad guys won't be alerted to his movements and should think he's still there.

Message from Sam says to contact General _____ at StarCorps Mars to explain situation and put group under his orders for nonce. Boris goes. General compliments Boris on his teams' info-gathering capabilities and explains that he wants Roderigo recruited. The General (or his Major) says they'll handle the meetings, but they want us to ensure safe transit when Rod tries to reach the government building. (They want Rod to come of his own free will so he won't be resistant to them.)

Boris asks for StarCorp0s to help him set up a new identity as current one is in danger from "police." Major Bjorkholm points out the the police identity used was that of a real officer though it is thought that that officer was elsewhere at the time. Boris gets haircut and uniform.

StarCorps Mars arranged for some joyriders to knock out the power lines to Rod's building, during which time the General show up and talks to Rod, telling Rod he needs to go to HQ the next day. Our team starts planning how to give him cover on the trip.

Chantal and bodyguard spent day in library researching Lost Cities.
